Projects and Campaigns

April 2013

Here at Earth Justice Ministries we consider the work of peacemaking, justice-building, and environmental healing as essential expressions of a spiritual perspective on life.  We work with faith communities and secular organizations to try to heal what is broken and to plant seeds for a future of justice, peace, and well-being for all living things.  Current projects include the following.  For details and analysis of these projects go to Sharon Delgado's blog.

A Demonstration to Close Guantanamo

April 11, 5:30 p.m.

Nevada City Freeway Overpass

On April 11, members of Earth Justice Ministries will stand with Women in Black, holding our "Torture is a Moral Issue" banner and our signs to "Close Guantanamo."  This local action will be one of many taking place around the country on the National Day of Action to Close Guantanamo and End Indefinite Detention, sponsored by Witness Against Torture  and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.

This is the third month of a hunger strike among Guantanamo prisoners.  Some are being force-fed.  To find out more about the hunger strikers, to make a phone call on their behalf, or to find out what else you can do, go to Witness Against Torture.

Tax Day Action Against Drones

April 15, Tax Day

Sacramento Federal Court,

5901 I Street, Sacramento

Join this tax day protest of drone warfare.  The action begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 15, in front of the Federal Courthouse at 5th and I Streets in Sacramento.  The protest is planned despite postponement of the trial of five activists who blocked the gates of Beale Air Force Base to protest the surveillance drones housed there.  The defendants will be present at the protest.

The five demonstrators facing charges for trespassing at Beale Air Force Base last October are:  David and Jan Hartsough, Shirley Osgood, Janie Kesselman, and Sharon Delgado.  They will be at the April 15 demonstration and are scheduled to appear in court on April 25, as defense lawyers negotiate with prosecutors to schedule the trial.

We will keep people updated about this case, background information, and actions related to drone warfare through our Earth Justice Ministries website and Facebook page.  Sharon Delgado is keeping people informed who follow her blog postings on drone warfare http://sharondelgado.org/category/drones-2/.  Check out the Occupy Beale AFB website for background and announcements about upcoming events.  http://occupybealeafb.org/#.

In addition to this trial, a coalition of peace and justice groups around the country are protesting drone warfare in April.  To find out about the plans being made by the Network to Stop Drone Surveillance and Warfare (NSDSW) go to the website of the No Drones Network.

Move to Amend

Upcoming Action on May 10

On May 10, Nevada County Move to Amend will join other coalition members around the country in displaying freeway banners to commemorate the 1886 Supreme Court Ruling in the Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad case.  In the case, argued 127 years ago, corporations argued they are protected under the 14th amendment (the amendment that was passed to ensure equal protection of African Americans after slavery was abolished). Since then, there has been case after case in which the Court expanded the Constitutional "rights" of corporations, leading up to the Citizens United case in 2010.  The freeway banner campaign is called "127 years is enough."  Find out more at Move to Amend.  https://movetoamend.org/call-action-may-10-127-years-enough.  Contact us to volunteer to take a two-hour shift helping hold a banner on the Brunswick Overpass sometime on that day, or go to national Move to Amend website to find a freeway banner action or a Move to Amend group closer to you.

Earth Justice Ministries is part of the Nevada County Move to Amend Coalition, which meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of  each month at the Nevada City United Methodist Church at 433 Broad Street in Nevada City.  The goal of the coalition is to raise awareness and build momentum toward passing a constitutional amendment to abolish corporate personhood and declare that money is not speech.  Upcoming meetings will be on April 9 and May 14.

Sign the national petition to support Move to Amend at their website:  https://movetoamend.org/
