Trial Date Set for Beale Defendants
August 12, 2013
August 12th is the trial date for the Beale defendants charged with misdemeanor trespass for a civil disobedience action during an anti-drone demonstration at Beale Air Force Base last October. Supporters are invited to gather the day of the trial at the Federal Courthouse at 5th and I Streets in Sacramento. The five defendants are: David and Jan Hartsough, Shirley Osgood, Janie Kesselman, and Sharon Delgado. They are charged with misdemeanor trespass, charges that carry a penalty of up to five years in federal prison, $5000 in fines, and five years' probation.
U.S. Magistrate Carolyn K. Delaney denied the defendants' request for a jury trial. She also granted the prosecutor's motion to disallow "the necessity defense," that is, a defense based on a claim by defendants that they were taking action to prevent a greater harm.
Public opposition to the U.S. drone warfare program is growing. On April 30, five more protestors were arrested at Beale: Five Arrested at Beale. They will be arraigned at the federal courthouse in Sacramento on Thursday, July 9. Find out about the Network to Stop Drone Surveillance and Warfare at the website of the No Drones Network. Faith groups are stepping up to the moral challenges presented by drone warfare. Go here to find out about faith-based anti-drone actions. Nevada County Climate Coalition
Several people who attended a May 28 presentation on climate change have formed a Nevada County Climate Change Coalition. At this point we are not scheduling meetings, but have created a FaceBook Page in order to share information and stay in touch about local events. Join the group by "Liking" the Climate Change Coalition FaceBook Page.
Demonstration to Support Hunger Strikers and Close Guantanamo
Wednesday, July 24, 5-6 p.m., Nevada City Overpass
There will be a local demonstration to close Guantanamo on Monday, July 24, 5-6 p.m., on the Nevada City Overpass. We will bring a large "Torture is a Moral Issue" banner and signs to "Close Guantanamo."
This is the fifth month of a hunger strike among Guantanamo prisoners. Many are being force-fed. Rapper Mos Def volunteered to undergo the force feeding procedure in order to demonstrate what it involved. See the video here. Witness Against Torture is calling on supporters to participate in rolling fast, in solidarity with those on hunger strike at Guantanamo. To participate in the rolling fast, to find out more about the hunger strikers, to make a phone call on their behalf, or to find out what else you can do, go to Witness Against Torture. Sign a petition here calling on President Obama to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.
Nevada County Move to Amend
Next Meeting: July 9, 6:30 p.m.
Nevada City United Methodist Church
Nevada County Move to Amend meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Nevada City United Methodist Church at 433 Broad Street in Nevada City. The next meeting will be July 9. Come early at 6 for a Facilitators Training/Review/Discussion. The goal of the coalition is to raise awareness and build momentum toward passing a constitutional amendment to abolish corporate personhood and declare that money is not speech.
Nevada County Move to Amend participated in the Fourth of July parade in Grass Valley. Our entry was a parade within a parade. Our Move to Amend truck, "Bubba," carried children and played the Corporations Aren't People song, while several of us danced along the parade route. Others carried banners that said "Corporations are not people" and "Money is not speech," held signs, and passed out literature, . A few "corporate persons" were in costume as well.
Our next project is to put together a booth for the Nevada County Fair. There are significant costs and volunteers needed, especially for the fair booth. To donate or to volunteer contact the Peace Center.
Nevada County Move to Amend is seeking local organizations that are willing to partner with us as we work with groups around the country to make the "We the People Amendment" a reality.
