People working together for peace, justice and the restoration of the community of life.
A Presentation on climate change by Earth Justice Ministries' Executive Director Sharon Delgado will be held Tuesday, May 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nevada City United Methodist Church, 433 Broad Street. Sharon has been speaking and writing about climate change for 25 years. She is a trained presenter for the Climate Reality Project http://climaterealityproject.org/.
The bottom line is this: Human-caused climate change is real. We can observe its effects. The impacts on the earth's natural systems are massive. We can and must take action now.
This presentation is sponsored by Nevada City United Methodist Church and Society Committee. For more information or to schedule a presentation for your group go to www.earth-justice.org, find Earth Justice Ministries on FaceBook, or contact Sharon Delgado at http://sharondelgado.org/contact/.
Trial Postponed for Beale 5
Over 50 anti-drone demonstrators gathered in front of the Federal Court in Sacramento on April 15, the date originally set for the trial of the Beale 5. During court proceedings on April 25, Judge Katherine K. Delaney set the new trial date for Monday, August 12, 2013. Supporters will gather that day before and during the trial at the Federal Courthouse at 5th and I Streets in Sacramento.
The five defendants are charged with misdemeanor trespass for a civil disobedience action during an anti-drone demonstration at Beale Air Force Base last October. The defendants are: David and Jan Hartsough, Shirley Osgood, Janie Kesselman, and Sharon Delgado.
In addition to this trial, a coalition of peace and justice groups around the country have been protesting drone warfare. Find out about the Network to Stop Drone Surveillance and Warfare at the website of the No Drones Network (http://nodronesnetwork.blogspot.com). Faith groups are stepping up to the moral challenges presented by drone warfare. Find out about faith-based anti-drone actions at:

Move to Amend: Upcoming May 10 Day of Action
On May 10, Nevada County Move to Amend (http://www.nevadacountymovetoamend.org) will join other coalition members around the country in displaying freeway banners to commemorate the 1886 Supreme Court Ruling in the "Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad case." In that case, which took place 127 years ago, corporations argued they are protected under the 14th amendment, the amendment that was passed to ensure equal protection of African Americans after slavery was abolished. Since then, in case after case, the Supreme Court has expanded the Constitutional "rights" of corporations, leading up to the Citizens United case in 2010.
The freeway banner campaign is called "127 years is enough." In Nevada County on May 10, people will hold two banners on the freeway overpass at Brunswick from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. We will need four volunteers to sign up for each 2-hour shift. We also need volunteers to help create the banners at a work party on Wednesday, April 8, at 1 p.m. Contact us (http://www.earth-justice.org/contact.html) to volunteer.
Nevada County Move to Amend (which includes Earth Justice Ministries) meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Nevada City United Methodist Church at 433 Broad Street in Nevada City. The next meeting will be May 14. The goal of the coalition is to raise awareness and build momentum toward passing a constitutional amendment to abolish corporate personhood and declare that money is not speech.
Nevada County Move to Amend is seeking other local organizations that are willing to partner with us as we work with groups around the country to make the "We the People Amendment" (https://movetoamend.org/wethepeopleamendment) a reality. We plan to participate in the July 4 parade, which will be held in Grass Valley, and to have a booth at the Nevada County Fair. Donations for this work are welcome.

Foreclosure Support Update:
Update on Billi Vogan's Case
Although our Foreclosure Support Group has not been meeting regularly, we continue to stay in touch with and support people who are facing foreclosure and/or eviction. Each foreclosure case that has been brought to our attention is complex, time-consuming, and frustrating. Depending on the outcome of peoples' struggles, we have rejoiced with those who rejoice and have wept with those who weep.
We have supported Billi Vogan and her husband Lee Traupel through a long and difficult process. Read "Foreclosure Fighter" (http://sharondelgado.org/selected-writings-by-sharon-delgado/foreclosure-fighter/) for details of this case. They had filed a precedent-setting case in federal court for wrongful foreclosure, hoping ultimately to regain the title to their home. We celebrated with them when Judge Dowling ruled that they could stay in their home until the wrongful foreclosure case against Wells Fargo was decided.
Now we are sad to report that the judge in Federal Court ruled against Billi and Lee in favor of Wells Fargo. This means that unless they appeal, they and their son will be evicted. We will continue to support them and keep you informed. We are also supporting another family with a wrongful foreclosure case in federal court.
Although foreclosures are down in California due to Attorney General Kamala Harris' untiring work on behalf of California homeowners, much more needs to be done. To find out more go to Homeowners for Justice (http://www.hofj.org/)
Witness Against Torture is calling on supporters to participate in rolling fast, in solidarity with those on hunger strike at Guantanamo. To participate, they are asking us to do three things:
1) Fast one day from midnight to midnight.
2) Write to one prisoner at Guantánamo. (Downloadable letters are available.)
3) Call the White House and insist that President Obama fulfill his promise to close Guantanamo: 202-456-1111, 202-456-1414.
Participants are also encouraged to: take a photo of yourself holding a sign indicating what day of the hunger strike you are fasting on and/or write a few sentences about the day’s experience. To find out more about the hunger strikers, to make a phone call on their behalf, or to find out what else you can do, go to Witness Against Torture (http://witnesstorture.org/).
Plastic Bag Ban
Earth Justice Ministries is joining with children from various Nevada County schools in a campaign to institute a ban in Nevada County on single-use plastic bags. Children are learning facts, making posters, and developing speeches about the issue. Last Saturday they hosted a showing at the local theater of "How the Kids Saved the Parks, followed by a showing of "Bag It," with children speaking about why they are involved in this new campaign. We will keep you informed as this campaign progresses. To find out more go to the Bag Busters of Nevada County FaceBook Page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/629250533768049/?fref=ts).
The last meeting of Speechcraft, led by Sharon Delgado, will be on May 7 at the Nevada City United Methodist Church at 433 Broad Street in Nevada City. This has been a four-week series of workshops to help improve public speaking skills. Several members of local activist groups participated. Go to the Nevada County Toastmasters website (http://toastmastersnevadacounty.org/) to find out about local Toastmasters clubs. To find out more about Toastmasters go the Toastmasters International website (http://www.toastmasters.org/). Toastmaster is a great organization for helping people learn to speak articulately about issues of concern.
