Making Sure Local High Schools are Safe for Students

I made the following public comment (below signature line) at the Nevada Joint Union High School District Board meeting on 8/13/2025, requesting that the board either update the language in its policies or make a resolution similar to the Tahoe Truckee School Board resolution so that students and their families know that our schools are safe for them.

In order for this to get any traction, the board and the district need to hear from people and groups in our community that we want these protections for our students.  Please encourage individuals and groups in the immigrants rights network to email both the board and the superintendent to encourage these actions.  Also, people need to show up at board meetings and make comments in support of these actions.

Becky’s Public Statement:

California Education Code 201 states that “All pupils have the right to participate fully in the educational process, free from discrimination and harassment”, and California Constitution Article 1, Section 28 guarantees a Right to Safe Schools – students have the inalienable right to attend campuses which are safe, secure and peaceful.

In addition, California Education Code Section 234.7 – the Student Protections Relating to Immigration and Citizenship Status – part E allows for the governing board or body of a local educational agency to establish stronger standards and protections than those in listed in that code as of January 1, 2018.

Therefore, I would like to see this board take action by either:

1) Updating Policy 0450 and Policy 5125.1 to include specific language that reflects the current guidelines put forth by the California Department of Justice regarding interactions between immigration-enforcement officers and our schools.

2) Adopting a resolution similar to the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District Sites As Safe Places for All.

Students and their families need to know that our schools are safe for them.  Taking this action to update this policy lets our students know they are our priority.

The Tahoe-Truckee School District protects immigrant Children in the following ways:

The regulation delineates procedures for documentation/notification of attempts by immigrantion enforcement to obtain student records and/or to access students on school grounds. Without adherence to these procedures, immigration officers will be denied access to the campus as well as any records. This is consistent with policies recommended by the California Deparment of Justice: What to do if an immigration officer comes to your school?
